“…things in their original simplicity contain their own natural power, power that is easily spoiled and lost when that simplicity is changed” [3].
Imagine you are swimming in a still lake and you dive under water. This water is still and clean so our sight underwater is clear and calm. Now look at the sand at the bottom of this lake. When the sand is moved around, the water becomes filled with sand particles and is not as clear as it once was. It’s not until water is still and the sand isn’t stirred that we can see clearly again.
This concept can be applied to life. When we taint our view with emotions and thoughts, we lose our clarity and stress builds up. The more we follow thoughts and emotions or stir up the sand, the more stress we build as our vision becomes tainted and unable to see clearly.
When we get stuck in an underwater sandstorm of reoccurring patterns of thoughts and emotions, grounding helps to calm the water and see clearly again. Grounding is “the process of removing the excess charge on an object by means of the transfer of electrons between it and another object of substantial size.” [5]. It is a way to calm emotions and thoughts so that you can see clearly again. It clears away thoughts and emotions that weigh us down by exchanging energy with an object of a high electromagnetic charge.
The most readily available object with a high electromagnetic charge is the earth that we live on. It’s being proven in physics and the study of electromagnetic energy that objects vibrate at certain frequencies and that living beings can pick up on frequencies by simply being in contact or connection with the object. The earth pulsates like a heartbeat at the frequency of 7.83 Hz [4]. Simply being in direct physical contact with the earth allows for a person to remove burdensome energy and to become more focused in the present moment.
Outdoor Grounding Techniques

When I have trouble letting go of thoughts or emotions that block me from peace in this present moment, I seek the great outdoors. I go to a place where I can ground myself with the energetically rich authentic essence of nature.
My backyard is where I take off my shoes and stand or sit in direct contact with the earth. Shoes usually have rubber, and this rubber barrier significantly suppresses the current of energy that naturally flows between you and the earth. In order to get the most benefit from grounding, it’s best to stand barefoot, without any rubber blocking the connection between your feet and the earth.
Connecting to the earth for an hour has been proven to improve people’s moods [2]. I usually earth for 20 minutes and feel great results, and even just 5 minutes of grounding has me feeling refreshed and renewed. While grounding, make an effort to feel the magnitude of the energy you are in contact with. Relax into a clear mind and let the present moment ease arising emotions. Once connected you may even feel a tingling sensation go up your body.
Swimming in a natural body of water is also a grounding experience. Water is a high energy conductor. When swimming in water your whole body is submerged in the electromagnetic energy of the water that is also being charged by the earth that it is connected to.
Another method of grounding is gardening. Gardening, especially without gloves or shoes, allows a person to come into contact with the energy of the earth in an intimate way. Gardening allows for your hands and feet to be connected to the earth as you work with the earth to grow new life.
City Life Grounding

If you don’t have daily access to open earth, here are ways to bring the power of natural simple tools into your own home:
Use grounding shoes.
Grounding shoes are shoes that strengthen your connection to the earth. They are built with a copper wire at the bottom sole of the shoe. This makes a circuit that connects the energy of the ground through the copper wire, throughout the straps of the shoe weaved with stainless steel thread, with your foot and the rest of your body.
Submerge yourself in water.
Another great grounding tool is to take a bath. When you take a bath, attempt to consciously feel the calm water and feel the relaxation that submersion in water brings. Water is highly electrical and helps calm thoughts and emotions.
Use essential oils for grounding.
Use essential oils for aromatherapy and topically by either inhaling the aroma as is, putting essential oils in your bath water, or putting essential oils in your lotion.
I recommend cedar wood and patchouli essential oils to get started.
Cedar wood essential oil is very relaxing. It helps one to balance their mind and emotions. It is also a great focusing and calming scent.
Patchouli essential oil helps one to find stability and peace.
Grounding has significant emotional and mental benefits. It also has proven to offer great physical health benefits. Grounding can impact the physiology of the body.
Grounding, according to studies and observations [1]:
- Reduces the body’s inflammation
- Diminishes pain,
- Enhances sleep
- Promotes higher energy
- Relaxes the nervous system
- Balances the body’s natural rhythms
- Improves blood flow
- Lessens muscle tension
- Decreases menstrual symptoms
- Defends against harmful environmental electromagnetic field waves
- Helps recovery after athletic activity
The overuse of thoughts and emotions can take us away from peace in the present moment. Practicing grounding daily helps to remove thoughts and emotions that cloud our vision. It is a tool that is readily available to most people and grounding offers substantial benefits for a person’s health and well-being.
